AMARAL Wins
IFDS Single-Person Dinghy World Championship 2005
San Felice Circeo, Italy
Two firsts on the final day gave Portugal’s Bento AMARAL victory in the IFDS Single-Person Dinghy World Championship 2005 in San Felice Circeo, Italy, whilst Zoltan PEGAN (AUS) took the honours in the Sabaudia’s Cup.
PEGAN won out over the 21 competitors racing in Italy with AMARAL the best of the nine sailors competing using full servo assist winches to control helm and main and jib sheets to contest the IFDS Single-Person Dinghy World Championship. In addition to his Worlds’ win, AMARAL finished second overall in the Sabaudia’s Cup ahead of Singapore’s Karim DIN ABDUL.
The persistent low pressure system which has dominated the weather in Italy continued to be a factor for sailors on Saturday with both races shortened due to the lift airs.
Both PEGAN and AMARAL maintained their winning ways on Saturday before going on to take dominant overall victories in better weather on Sunday. Australia’s Colin JOHANSON claimed second place in the Worlds, with Portugal’s Fernando PEREIRA completing the podium.
